Community Advisory Board Meeting Minutes February 13, 2014

Members Present:  Megan Boone, Mary Caric, Drew Henderson, Black Bear (Stephen LaBoueff), Carol Laferty, Jeff Ray, Dr. Kimberlee (Kim) Sharp and Angela Traver

The meeting began at 6:00PM in the studios of Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) at Morehead State University (MSU).  Drew Henderson, MSPR Community Advisory Board (CAB) vice-chair, welcomed members of the CAB.

Old Business

Minutes of the November 7, 2013 meeting were reviewed. Megan Boone made a motion to approve the meeting minutes as presented. Mary Caric seconded the motion. The motion passed.

MSPR’s Quarterly Program Report for the period of October – December 2013 was reviewed. Following general discussion, Angela Traver made a motion to accept the quarterly report as presented. Kim Sharp  seconded the motion. The motion passed.

New Business

Nominations were accepted for 2014 CAB officers. Megan Boone made a motion to nominate Angela Traver as Vice-Chair. Kim Sharp seconded the motion. The motion passed. Kim Sharp made a motion to nominate Megan Boone as Secretary. Angela Traver seconded the motion. The motion passed. Drew Henderson thanked and welcomed the new CAB officers.

Applications for the 2014 CAB Student Leadership Award were reviewed and discussed. Angela Traver made a motion to nominate Asa Hosoda for the award. Mary Caric seconded the motion. The motion passed. The award will be presented during a public ceremony at MSU on April 24.

Paul Hitchcock mentioned that MSPR’s Spring Fundraiser and Membership Drive will begin with a call-out campaign to current and recent members, followed by a mail-out campaign. On-air announcements will be coordinated during the two initiatives.

Paul Hitchcock presented a programming proposal to take effect on June 7, 2014. The proposal focused on weekend programming and included adding several new shows: “Whad ‘Ya Know” (PRI), “Comment On Kentucky” and “Connections with Renee Shaw” (KET), “Weekend All Things Considered” and hour 2 of “Saturday Weekend Edition” (NPR). Local shows produced by MSPR to be added include: “Between The Covers,” “KCTM Presents” and “Sin Fronteras.” The new shows are in addition to recently added new programming such as “Now And Again,” “Odd Numbers,” “Shaping Appalachia,” and “Sunday Night Jazz Showcase.” Following general discussion, Kim Sharp made a motion to accept the programming proposal as presented. Angela Traver seconded the motion. The motion passed. Hitchcock said MSPR will promote the program changes through on-air announcements, press releases and social media (website, Facebook and Twitter).

MSPR’s Contest and Giveaway Policy was presented to the CAB. Following general discussion, a motion was made by Jeff Ray to accept the policy as presented retroactive to January 1, 2014. Megan Boone seconded the motion. The motion passed.

MSPR’s Public Media Code of Integrity was presented to the CAB. Following general discussion, a motion was made by Mary Caric to accept the policy as presented. Carol Laferty seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Paul Hitchcock shared information regarding WMKY’s auxiliary transmitter operations. In 2013, the auxiliary was used for 282 hours totaling 11.75 days. So far in 2014, it has been used for 135.75 hours totaling 5.66 days. Hitchcock said the auxiliary transmitter is extremely valuable and recognized the assistance of Gateway Radio Works (WIVY/WKCA/WMST) in the project.

The next CAB meeting will take place in MSPR’s studios at 6:00PM on Thursday, May 8, 2014.

There being no further business to discuss, a motion was made by Megan Boone to adjourn the meeting. Kim Sharp seconded the motion. The motion passed. The meeting concluded at 7:15PM.
