2016 Memorial Day Weekend Specials on MSPR

"Hank Williams: I Saw The Light" -- Friday, May 27 @ 8 p.m.

Playing a legend like Hank Williams is no small feat. Hank was as complicated a person as they come, and actor Tom Hiddleston had his work cut out for him. With the help of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Rodney Crowell, Tom dove into the role of Hank for the film “I Saw The Light.”

"KY Writers Hall of Fame" -- Sunday, May 29 @ 3 p.m.

“Miles Ahead” -- Sunday, May 29 @ 8 p.m.

Gunfights. Car chases. A shady journalist. An artist on the edge. These are not the things you’d expect from a film about a jazz musician.

But with Miles Ahead, director and star Don Cheadle created a portrait of Miles Davis that the legendary trumpeter would have loved to be a part of.

Josh Jackson hosts an hour of conversation with Don Cheadle, Miles' son Erin Davis, nephew Vince Wilburn, Jr. and film score composer Robert Glasper.

“Keeping Their Stories Alive” -- Memorial Day @ 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra for "God Bless America", "On This Day", “Flag of the Free", “Distant Land" , "Salute to the Armed Forces," and more.

“Breaking Ground: Lower Income, Higher Ed” -- Memorial Day @ 10 a.m.

College is seen as one of the most important ways for young people to break the cycle of poverty. In 2012, young adults with a bachelor's degree earned 57 percent more than young adult high school grads ($46,900 vs. $30,000). In the past few years, the Obama administration, private foundations and education reformers have focused on helping low-income children apply to college and receive financial aid.

This, however, is only half the story. Research shows only one in four of these students actually graduate from college. Usually they drop out in their freshmen year. That was the case for Christopher Feaster, a Washington, D.C. teen who graduated near the top of his class despite being homeless. Christopher won a full-ride scholarship to Michigan State University, but found college life was very different from what he expected.

In this latest Breaking Ground documentary, we’ll introduce you to Christopher, explore how his story reflects the broader challenges facing low-income students, and consider potential solutions to the nation’s dismal college completion rates for its most vulnerable students.

“Reinventing Childhood” -- Memorial Day @ 11 a.m.

In this special show, we look at the reinvention of childhood. We'll investigate whether technology is rewiring young brains. Plus, we look at how parental behavior has evolved, molding children in entirely new ways.
