American Red Cross to Host Volunteer and Responder Training

Kokomo Herald

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to help with disasters, assist military families, and serve the community in Rowan and surrounding counties.

No matter what the disaster may be, floods, tornadoes, fires, earthquakes; American Red Cross Volunteers are always there to lend a helping hand to support their community.

“Volunteer opportunities available at the Red Cross are endless; everything from local disasters to national responses, administrative support to support for our armed forces, from blood drives to community preparedness training.” said Joanna King, Executive Director Eastern Kentucky Chapter. “If you have a desire to assist your community and a little time to invest, the Red Cross has a place for you.”

On Tuesday, August 16th 2016, at 6:00pm the Eastern Kentucky Chapter will host new volunteer and disaster volunteer training sessions in Owingsville, KY at the Bath County Extension Office.

Residents from Rowan, Morgan, Bath, Fleming or other surrounding counties who are interested in learning more about volunteering with the Red Cross in their communities are encouraged to attend this informational session. Red Cross staff and volunteers will be on-hand to share their experiences and explain the variety of roles available at the Red Cross.

Red Cross Disaster Relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency needs caused by disaster. When disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there to provide shelter, food, and emotional support to assist families in resuming their daily routine.  The Red Cross is always looking for new individuals to lend a helping hand and help prepare their community.

Working with the Red Cross can also help those that volunteer to be prepared in the event of an emergency situation.

"By preparing our communities for emergencies, we build a stronger network of our response. When people prepare for an emergency, the less impact it will have on them. Preparation leads to people managing their recovery better and the sooner they can get back to their everyday routine,” said Jody Oldham, Disaster Program Manager for the American Red Cross Eastern Kentucky.
