Baseball Secures First Season Victory

MSU Athletics

Sophomore right-hander Tyler Keele recorded seven strikeouts and allowed only one hit in five innings, propelling the Morehead State baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Wofford on Monday night (Feb. 17) at King Field.

The Eagles improve to 1-3 with the win, while the Terriers fall to 0-3 with the loss.

Keele secured the win, while freshman righty Luke Humphreys picked up the first save of his career, allowing only three hits in four innings of relief. Wofford junior right-hander Connell Anderson was tagged with the loss.

We pitched an outstanding ballgame tonight," Head Coach Mike McGuire. "Tyler (Keele) pitched a great game, and Luke (Humphreys) pitched as well as we knew he would. We expect big things out of both of them this season, and they showed us why."

Wofford got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore shortstop Derek Hirsch singled, and later scored on a wild pitch.

MSU answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, capped by a two-out, two-run single from junior third baseman Blaine Tanner. The Eagles added another two in the seventh on a two-out, two-run double from junior catcher Chris Robinson to take a 5-1 lead.

The Terriers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs on two hits before MSU shut the door on the rally.

Junior first baseman Kane Sweeney had his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with two walks.

"I was happy with our patience at the plate tonight," McGuire said. "We only had one strikeout compared to four walks, and we came up with some big two-out hits."

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Itta Bena, Miss., for a matchup with Mississippi Valley State.
