Bicycle Club Wants Safer Streets

Cityphile

Members of the Ashland Bicycle Club want the city to make the streets safer for them as they ride through the community. Kent Morrison made the pitch to city commissioners on Thursday (August 14).

Morrison says the club is not calling for special bike lanes, just markings on the street reminding motorists to be aware of cyclists.

Morrison says he and other members of the club have had a few close calls.

“It happens in the city, it happens out in the country. A lot of the places we ride out in the county have big, large ‘share the road’ signs, and it makes a tremendous difference. People give us a little more respect, a little more room. We hope they can do the same thing here in town.” –Kent Morrison

Morrison says bicycling is growing in popularity locally and across the country. He says the Ashland club had 40 members in 2003. Today, Morrison says, it has 236 members.
