Bracken County Officials Issue Scam Warning

Rip Off Report

A potential scam has been reported in Bracken County.

According to Sheriff Howard Niemeier, “Bracken County Sheriff’s Office received several calls in regards to a Jeff Brown identifying himself as a member of the Bracken County Chamber of Commerce attempting to sell totes/bags to businesses.”

The Bracken County Chamber of Commerce has been contacted and replied to police they are not involved in the alleged project, he said.

Totes2Go has also been contacted and told to stop all such solicitations in Bracken County, Niemeier said.

“If you get a call from these individuals advise them that you are not interested and hang up on them,” he said.

According to information on the Federal Trade Commission website:

-- Every year, thousands of people lose money to telephone scams.

-- Scammers will say anything to steal from their victims, especially the elderly.

-- A friendly manner or claims to know friends, or be familiar with a local business are ways scammers try to make victims more at ease to gain trust.

-- Never give out your personal information, bank account numbers, credit card information or Social Security Numbers to callers.
