Repairs to the Russell viaduct (KY 244) bridge in Greenup County will require a four-day temporary closure next week.
Beginning Tuesday, July 25, and continuing through Friday, July 28, the viaduct will be closed, day and night, as structures and maintenance crews with the Kentucky Department of Highways patch the pavement and repair parts of the bridge along the roadway center line.
Motorists should use caution through the KY 244/US 23/Ironton-Russell bridge intersection, follow signs and barrels marking lane closures, and use US 23 and Ferry Street or other routes to detour. Emergency vehicle traffic such as ambulances or fire trucks will not be affected.
Message boards on KY 244, US 23 and the Ironton-Russell Bridge will be used to communicate traffic restrictions and schedule changes during the repairs.
The repair work is necessary to extend the life of the bridge – a replacement project has been designed and is moving toward construction. Repairs were scheduled now to avoid impacts to school traffic and to guard against bridge repairs or closures during the winter.
