Check Cashing Scam Hits Mason County

Better Business Bureau

A man posing as an employee of a cable company in order to cash fake payroll checks has scammed one local business out of more than $300.

On Friday, the Mason County Sheriff's Office reposted a photo of the man to its Facebook page. The photo, taken from a Lexington news station, shows a white male wearing a blue and white stripe polo-style shirt entering a liquor store.

Mason County Sheriff Patrick Boggs said the man has been running the check cashing scam since at least 2012.  The man poses as an employee of Time Warner Cable in order to cash fraudulent payroll checks.  Boggs said the amount is always the same, $367.54.

The man cashed a check in that amount on Nov. 15 at the Ryan Farm Supply store on Kentucky 9 in eastern Mason County.  Boggs said the fake check was reported Friday, Nov. 21 by the store owners.

The man is a white male with a bald head, estimated to be in his 40s.  Boggs estimated his height as between 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches, and weighing about 250 pounds.

The man has been conducting his scam in Cincinnati, northern Kentucky, Lexington and Casey County, according to Boggs.

Part of the scam is to present the store employee with a fake ID, with information matching the name and address printed on the check.

Anyone with information should contact the Mason County Sheriff's Office at 606-564-3309.
