Concert Choir to host Chili Cook-off

Morehead State University’s Concert Choir will host the 2nd annual Chili Cook-off Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 123 East Main Street, Morehead.

Proceeds from the dinner will support the choir’s next international tour.

The meal will consist of competition chili and your choice of pimento cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for children 12 and under. Children 2 and under are free.

Tickets may be secured by calling choir president Matt Hammond at 606-483-1662. A limited amount of tickets also will be available at the door.

The grand prize for the contest will be two tickets to the MSU Madrigal Feaste held on Dec. 1 and 2. The tickets are a $70 value. Anyone interested in competing in the Chili Cook-off should leave a voicemail (name and number) at the same phone number.

The annual Fall Choral Showcase Concert will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the First Baptist sanctuary. Chamber Singers, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, and Black Gospel Ensemble will join the Concert Choir for the program.

Drs. Roosevelt Escalante, Jr. and Greg Detweiler conduct the choral groups.

The event is free and open to the public.

Concert Choir will open the program with the rousing South Africa freedom song, “Vela! Asambeni Siyekhaya!” by Andrè van der Merwe. They also will perform “Why Art Thou So Heavy, O My Soul?” by Henry Loosemore and the delightful “Lightly stepped a yellow star” from Dan Forrest’s Three Nocturnes for choir and percussion.

Chamber Singers will continue the program with madrigals and part songs including “Il est bel et bon” by Pierre Passereau, “Die Nachtigall” by Felix Mendelssohn, and “Go, Lovely Rose” by David C. Dickau.

Jazz Vocal Ensemble will perform “Melba’s Blues” arranged by Waldo King, “Sophisticated Lady” arranged by Dave Barduhn, and “Giant Steps” arranged by Darmon Meader.

The evening will conclude with the Black Gospel Ensemble. They will sing “Rejoice” by Phillip Carter, “No One Like You” by Christopher Atkins, “Don’t Cry” by Kirk Franklin and “We’ve Come to Worship You” by Roosevelt Escalante, Jr.
