CPE Approves Tuition Increases

MBA School Authority

At its meeting Friday at Morehead State University, the Council on Postsecondary Education approved among the lowest tuition and mandatory fee rate increases in more than a decade for students attending Eastern Kentucky University, Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky.

CPE President Bob King said, “We commend the campuses for staying within the guidelines established last year by the Council and for continuing their efforts to keep tuition as low as possible.”

Aimed at ensuring affordable college tuition for resident undergraduates, rates will increase this fall 2.9 percent at Eastern Kentucky University and Murray State University. At Northern Kentucky University, rates will increase 3.1 percent, while University of Kentucky rates will go up 3 percent. Last year’s rates for these institutions ranged from 4.7 percent to 5.1 percent.

All rates comply with the Council’s two-year tuition and mandatory fee ceilings set last year to balance the competing priorities of affordability and access for Kentucky students and their families with the resource needs of the postsecondary institutions given the impact of state budget cuts since 2007-08.

Rates for the remaining public campuses will be set at the Council’s June meeting.

The Council also approved an exception to its 2015-16 resident undergraduate tuition and mandatory fee rate ceiling for EKU, which allows a student-endorsed fee of $150 per semester for full-time students, prorated at $12.50 per credit hour for part-time students. Revenue from the fee will support renovation of the EKU Student Union (Powell Building) and the construction of a new recreation and wellness center.

In other business, the Council approved five new academic programs at Western Kentucky University: Master of Arts in education in gifted education and talent development; Bachelor of Science in special education: learning and behavioral disorders and elementary education; Bachelor of Science in civil engineering; Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering; and Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. The Council also set its 2016 meeting schedule.

Council Chair Glenn Denton appointed Arnold Taylor as chair and members Dan Flanagan, Marcia Ridings, Joe Graviss and Dr. Robert Staat to the 2016-18 Budget Development Work Group.

The Council’s next meeting is set June 11-12.
