Día de los Muertos exhibition to open Oct. 29

Morehead State University’s Department of Art and Design will host a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit Oct. 29- Nov. 7 in the Strider Gallery of the Claypool-Young Art Building.

An opening celebration will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Día de los Muertos is an annual Mexican celebration of life in remembrance of the dead.  A synthesis of an Aztec festival that pays tribute to Mictecacihuatl, the goddess of the dead, and the Spanish Catholic All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, it is a time when families build altars in their homes in honor of their deceased loved ones and visit and adorn the cemeteries.

In this spirit, students in the World Arts class (Art 263) and MSU’s Spanish club have created altars, designed papel picado (paper cutouts), and prepared traditional foods to share (including Bread of the Dead and sugar skulls).  Graphic design students and members of The Artists Collective are exhibiting their own interpretations of this festive and meaningful holiday.

Everyone is invited to view the altars and sample the foods.
