Eagle Soccer Soars to Second Straight Win

MSU Athletics

An energized offense was the difference maker for Morehead State soccer (2-2) in a 2-1 victory over Xavier (2-2) at Jayne Stadium on Sunday.

Both goals came in the first half, as MSU applied pressure with four shots on goal.

The first came in the 10th minute, as junior forward Angela Black collected her first of the year. Black took a corner kick from freshman midfielder Samantha Damante, for a five yard flick of the left foot to put the Eagles on the board first. The assist from Damante was the first of her career.

Freshman forward Abby Timm added one of her own in the 19th minute, as she took a lead pass from senior midfielder Macy Kootz, juking her way into the box, for a swiping strike into the net.

"I knew if I could get a touch on it and around her (the defender), I could get a lane to the goal, and that's what happened," said Timm.

The score by Timm was the first of her career, and the first assist of the season by Kootz.

The Musketeers capitalized in the 65th minute, as sophomore forward Kenadie Carlson was able cut through the box and put a score on the board, cutting the Eagles lead in half. Senior goalkeeper Kaitlynn Murphy controlled the lay of the land though, marking her career best in saves with six.

The Eagles will hit the road for four straight matches, beginning Friday at Wyoming. That will be followed by contests at Air Force Sunday and matches in Charleston, S.C., against Francis Marion and Charleston Southern next weekend.
