Eagle Softball Hangs on for 4-3 Win at Belmont to Sweep Series

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State softball team held on to a 4-3 victory to sweep the three-game series at Belmont to open OVC play.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 13-9 and 3-0 in league play. Belmont falls to 7-20 and 0-3 in the OVC.

"It was great to get the sweep," said head coach David Williams. "Our pitching staff continued to give us quality innings and the defense backed them up. Karly (Thompson) continued her hot streak at the plate, providing clutch hits and important RBIs."

After two hitless innings to start the game, Morehead State got on the board with two runs in the third and the fourth innings.

In the third, Karly Thompson continued her hot play at the plate by delivering a two-run single up the middle, scoring Kayla McGuffey and Aubrey Bennett and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, the Eagles added two unearned runs, courtesy of three Belmont errors to start the inning, to build a 4-0 lead.

Mackenzie Grossmann threw five scoreless innings before getting into trouble in the sixth. With one out and a runner on first, she allowed back-to-back doubles, scoring two runs and trimming the Morehead State lead to 4-2. Taylor Funk then entered the game and allowed an inherited runner to score on a two-out single before retiring the side.

After allowing a leadoff single in the seventh, Funk forced a pop out to shortstop, a force out at second, and then a fly out to left field to secure the 4-3 win.

Grossmann (5-4) picked up the win after allowing three hits and three runs in 5.1 innings. She walked three and struck out three.

Funk recorded the first save of her career. She allowed two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. She finished 7-for-11 with eight runs batted in for the series.

Next up, the Eagles remain on the road and face Appalachian State in a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch of the first game is set for 4 p.m. ET.
