Eagle Volleyball Falls to Ball State, 3-1

MSU Athletics

In their final game of the Courgar Challenge, the Morehead State Volleyball team took the first set over Ball State, 25-22, but would lose three straight to fall to the Cardinals, 3-1. The fell 25-22 (MSU), 25-20 (BSU), 28-26 (BSU), 25-19 (BSU).

MSU came out firing early in the first set as they had nine quick kills, including five from freshman Merideth Jewell, and jumped out to a 17-16 lead. They would close out the first set with a 25-22 win, as several Eagles recorded kills, including Jewell, senior Hannah Sigala, junior Sydney Schuler, and sophomore Alli Evans.

After Ball State evened things up with a 25-20 win in the second, Morehead State responded by opening up the third with a 19-13 lead. But, BSU would battle back and take the lead at 26-25. A kill by Schuler evened things up at 26, but two points later Mackenzie Kitchel's kill would give the Cardinals a 28-26 win and a 2-1 lead.

In the early parts of the fourth set, MSU led most of the way, their biggest lead coming at 10-7. But, BSU took the lead at 13-12 off of an attack error by Jewell and would lead the rest of the way. A 10-2 scoring stretch would give BSU a 20-14 lead and they went on to a 25-19 win to seal the match.

"Today was another step in the right direction," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "We scrapped for balls on the defensive side in ways that we haven't done this season. We put ourselves in position to win the third, but weren't able to finish a couple of plays. It was nice to get some needed offense from some different areas today. Sydney did a great job, as did Hannah and Alli in finding ways to score. While they are not as big as we would like, we are making steps in the right direction and today showed that. I am proud of the effort on the floor."

Jewell once again led the way for Morehead State with 13 kills on 59 total attacks. She now has double-digit kills in all ten games and a total of 176 on the young season.

Sigala finished with eight kills and seven blocks, while junior Bailey Nichol returned to control the offense with 39 total assists.

Following a stretch of seven straight road games, the Eagles return home next weekend to participate in the Comfort Inn-Vitational. They will face Akron and East Tennessee State on Friday and then close out the tournament against Samford on Saturday. All games will take place at Wetherby Gym.
