The Community Action Council expects federal funds for low-income families with their heating bills to last through the December.
But the early onset of winter weather could spell trouble in the months to come.
The CAC has spent nearly $500,000 on heating assistance for about 4,000 families since the start of this year’s LIHEAP or Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, but council spokesmen Cameron Minter says the real challenge may come in January when residents begin applying for LIHEAP Crisis funds.
"That's the concern. What money we've spent here... whatever's left over would be utilized for the crisis program. And of course by then we'll be getting the bills from November and December," he says.
To be eligible for crisis dollars, resident have to show that they have either lost or are close to losing their heat.
Minter says the group often runs out of federal funds for that program and that’s when donations become especially crucial. You can find the link to give at commaction.org.
