Family Weekend slated for Sept. 5-6

For more than three decades, Morehead State University has welcomed students’ parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and neighbors to campus for a weekend of events and good times. This year marks the 35th annual Family Weekend, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6.

“We would like to invite everyone to take part in our Family Weekend,” said President Wayne D. Andrews. “For more than 30 years, this has been a tradition which allows students’ family and friends to see our beautiful campus, get a taste of what college life is all about and to spend time with their loved ones who are here in school.”

A variety of activities are planned for Family Weekend which kicks off from 4-9 p.m. on Friday with Family Fun Night sponsored by the Recreation and Wellness Center. The Eagle soccer team will host Appalachian State at 6 p.m.at Jayne Stadium also on Friday, while the Student Government Association will present “Morehead Idol” at noon at Button Auditorium. There is no admission charge but donations will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Student Hardship Assistance Resource Exchange (SHARE) fund, managed by the Office of Student Life.

The University Bookstore in the Adron Doran University Center will have extended hours from 1-5 p.m. Saturday.

At 2 p.m. Star Theatre shows will occur at Smith-Booth Hall while later that night (9:30-11 p.m.) the Space Science Center will host International Observe the Moon Night.

From 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, the Eagle Rally Zone (near Jayne Stadium) will be the site of the Family Weekend Tailgate before the Eagle football game. The Family Association free picnic will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Eagle Rally Zone Tailgate Area.

Head coach Rob Tenyer’s football Eagles will face off against the University of Pikeville at Jayne Stadium at 6 p.m. Students, who are admitted free with their EagleCard, may purchase tickets for their families in advance in the athletics office in the AAC.

Various motels, inns and camping facilities are available for those who prefer to stay off-campus.

Parents registered during Family Weekend have the opportunity for their son or daughter to win a textbook scholarship of $250 for the spring semester. Winners will be announced during the football game and must be present to claim the award.
