Piles of snow have caused a shortage of parking in residential and business districts of Maysville.
As road crews worked last week to keep roadways clear, the result has been large piles of snow that have frozen over during below zero temperatures. Snow that was shoveled off sidewalks by property owners, in an attempt to keep sidewalks clear added to the growing problem.
Maysville City Manager Ray Young said Wednesday snow piles in subdivisions and on downtown streets that were frozen solid are beginning to melt with warmer temperatures.
"Until today, the piles have been hard to push because they are so frozen," Young said.
The dilemma for city officials has been whether to attempt to move the snow piles or let warmer temperatures do the work. Young said during discussion Wednesday, it was decided since temperatures are expected to reach 46 degrees over the weekend, along with predictions of rain, to leave the situation alone.
"If we were to have another week of zero temperatures, we would have to do something....anything we do (now) would make it worse...if it were January, we would move it," he said.
He also noted there are limited places to push/remove the snow to, because there are snow piles all around the city.
Young said because many residents park on the street, implementing a street sweeper type of schedule wouldn't be efficient because there is limited parking on both sides of the street.
"It's supposed to be above freezing every day next week, which should take care of it," he said.
