Heroin Crackdown Legislation

Campbell County District Court Judge Karen Thomas says heroin dealers in Kentucky need to be dealt with harshly. Thomas testified today before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of legislation that stiffens penalties for heroin traffickers and also expands education and treatment services. The measure is sponsored by Republican Senator Katie Stine of Southgate.

Bellevue Police Chief Wayne Turner says 54 Campbell County residents died from overdoses of heroin last year. He says the drug is coming into Kentucky through dealers in Cincinnati.

Kentucky’s drug czar told state senators in Frankfort today  he supports a bill that makes it easier to prosecute heroin dealers for homicide when they cause a person’s death. Van Ingram heads the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy.

Ingram is a former Maysville police chief who was joined by other law enforcement officials in saying that heroin addictions are spreading quickly across Kentucky. Republican State Senator Katie Stine of Southgate is the sponsor of legislation calling for longer prison sentences for heroin traffickers, as well as additional education and treatment services.
