Hogge Becomes Morehead State's First Medalist Since 2006

MSU Athletics

Junior Logan Hogge posted a career-best 202 at the F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate to become Morehead State's first medalist in more than eight years. He opened with rounds of 72 and 64 on Monday at The Links at Novadell before closing out with a 66 on Tuesday (Oct. 21).

"Logan's performance was one of the best I've ever seen," Head Coach Matthew Martin said. "He was firing on all cylinders and really put together a memorable tournament. We jokingly told Logan he should find a PGA Tour qualifier because he's currently playing the best golf of his career."

The tournament victory was MSU's first since Oct. 10, 2006, when Matt Gann claimed medalist honors at the Rex Chaney Eagle Classic. Gann fired a three-round 205 in that event. Hogge's second-round mark was a career best and ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference this year.

"I felt really good in all three rounds," Hogge said. "I kept the ball in play and recovered when I hit bad shots. I got the ball to the green quickly and was able to capitalize on my good shots. One of the keys was figuring out how to read the greens. Once I did that, I was able to convert some putts."

Hogge finishes the fall with a 70.6 stroke average, which places second in the league. He also turned in a .948 individual winning percentage, with 361 victories and just 20 losses. The native of nearby Salt Lick, Ky., registered 11 rounds at even or under par and now has 19 in his collegiate career.

"Logan had an outstanding fall," Martin said. "His performances, across the board, should give him plenty of confidence heading into the spring season. I haven't seen every golfer in our league, but feel like Logan can play with just about anyone when he's dialed in like he was throughout the fall."

Morehead State wrapped up the APSU Intercollegiate 10th out of 12 teams. The Eagles managed a final-round 298 on their way to an 886. The Governors won the 54-hole event with an 842, while UT Martin was eight shots back and Eastern Kentucky was nine strokes behind.

Junior Brad Newnam (76, 226), freshman Blake Cartwright (79, 229), junior Will Branham (77, 231) and sophomore Connor Thiel (82, 238) also competed for the Eagles in their final tournament of the fall season. Morehead State did not have anyone competing as an individual.

The course played at a par of 72 and yardage of 6,841.

Morehead State opens its spring campaign March 13-15 at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in North Carolina. The Eagles are scheduled to compete in four spring tournaments before the annual conference tournament in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

"Our team showed a lot of improvement this fall, and we're excited about the spring season," Hogge added. "Everyone in our line-up proved they are capable of good scores. If we focus on our game, we should be competitive in every tournament."
