It's Business As Usual For Most Gateway Region Clerks

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

It has been nearly a month since the United States Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states.

Since that time, there have been reports of protests and clerks throughout the commonwealth refusing to issue licenses to any couple, citing religious objections to same sex marriage.

The refusal to issue licenses has led couples to seek marriage licenses outside of their home counties and even prompted a lawsuit against the Rowan County Clerk.

In the local area, however, there have been no such issues and clerks are issuing licenses as they have always done.

Mason County Clerk Stephanie Schumacher said since the legalization, she has had two same-sex couples come to her office seeking marriage licenses.

The documents needed to process the marriage licenses were available online for her office to access on the same day as the ruling, but it was not until a later date that she had couples requesting the licenses.

"We didn't have any on the same day the Supreme Court ruled," she said. "But, we have had two couples since then."

Schumacher said there were no issues with processing the requests.

"They came in, got their license and got married," she said.

In Lewis County, one couple has requested a license, according to Clerk Glenda Himes.

"We've had one couple come in," she said. "There were no issues with anything. Everything went very smooth."

In Fleming County, a deputy clerk for Jarrod Fritz said no couples have requested licenses.

Bracken County Clerk Raejean Poe said there have been no requests or inquiries for licenses, but she did not foresee any problems should there be requests.

"If they come in and request a license, we will issue them," she said.

Robertson County Clerk Jonie Jolley also said she will issue license should a couple request one. However, there have been no requests since the ruling.
