Kentucky Arts Council Offers Master Class on Kentucky Performers

Some of Kentucky's most successful and sought-after performers and groups working in the Commonwealth today will come together in October to offer a unique and exciting learning opportunity about working with and presenting Kentucky talent.

"Master Class: A Learning Lab on Presenting Kentucky Performers" will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at The Grand Theatre in Frankfort. The free training event is produced by the Kentucky Arts Council and includes some of the finest working performing artists in the Commonwealth who are also participants in the arts council's Performing Arts Directory.

"The schedule for our inaugural 'Master Class' is an amazing lineup of professional performers who make a significant part of their living through their performance work," said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director.

"Not only will attendees see these performers in action on stage, they will also receive training from the pros on various topics. Our performers have valuable knowledge and a wide range of expertise in how to successfully integrate and incorporate Kentucky performers into your events, festivals, communities and other artistic endeavors," added Meadows.

The event is for organizations, businesses, agencies, municipalities, libraries, event planners, arts educators, Main Street managers, Trail Towns, wineries and distilleries, the hospitality industry, and others who stage lives performances or want to incorporate live performances into their programming. The event is free for participants but registration is required.

The day will offer a blend of showcase performances and working sessions about a variety of topics. Participants will also have opportunities to talk one-on-one with the performers and presenters. Kentucky performers featured during the event are:

•Stirfry Musette, gypsy folk and world music

•Appalatin, world music

•Graham Shelby, storyteller

•Hog Operation, bluegrass music

•Mitch Barrett, singer-songwriter

•Kentucky Wild Horse, old-time music

•Lakshmi Sriraman, classical Indian dance

•John Edmonds, gospel-soul music

Work sessions will include presentations about working with independent performers, community-based performers, festivals and incorporating cultural elements into community-based events.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Paul Hitchcock earned his Masters in Communications from Morehead State University and Bachelors in Radio-TV/Psychology from Georgetown College. A veteran broadcaster for more than 40 years and an avid fan of blues, jazz and American roots music. Hitchcock has been with WMKY since 1986 and was named General Manager in 2003. He currently hosts "Muddy Bottom Blues" (Fri., 8pm-9pm), "Nothin' But The Blues" (Sat., 8pm-12am), "Sunday Night Jazz Showcase" and "Live From The Jazz Lounge" (Sun., 8pm-9pm) and "The Golden Age of Radio" (Sun., 2pm-3pm). He also serves as producer for "A Time For Tales" and "The Reader's Notebook."
