Kentucky Gateway Museum Center Hosting Lego Exhibit

Cody Evans, The Ledger Independent

An exhibit featuring Legos, colorful interlocking plastic building bricks, at the Kentucky Gateway Museum has been attracting families from all over.

KGMC Curator Sue Ellen Grannis said since the exhibit opened in late June, there have been several families and children come to the museum to see the artwork created by Legos.

"We had one child create an entire Christmas scene," Grannis said. "We had the London bridge, a Harry Potter set, a theater. It's fun for the children."

Grannis said the idea for the Lego exhibit came about when she started thinking about something that children would enjoy during the summer months.

"This was suggested to us a long time ago," she said. "So, we thought, this would be great for kids in the summer. We've had children and others bring in exhibits they created and put them up. When the exhibit goes down, those who donated the exhibits will get theirs back. We also had people donate Lego sets for children to come in and play with."

Grannis said the exhibit also features two movies, The Lego movie and Lego: Star Wars.

"People can come in and just sit and watch the movies if they want," she said.

Watching The Lego Movie and building their own sets is exactly what two children, visiting from Florida, were doing Tuesday afternoon.

Johnathan Pollitt, 9, and sister Clair Pollitt, 7, come to Maysville about once a year with their parents to visit their grandmother, Ann Pollitt, who works for KGMC. Every time they come to Maysville, they visit the museum.

"My husband's parents are from Maysville," their mother, Cindy Pollitt, said. "We try to come up once a year and visit. This year, we knew they would love the Lego exhibit. They asked if they could play with some of the Legos, but I wasn't sure if we'd have time. I guess they got to play after all."

Johnathan Pollitt said he was excited to see all of the different Lego sets while also sitting down to build his own using the Lego: Star Wars set.

"I love how there are Legos from everything in here," he said. "There are movie Legos, architectural Legos. It's just amazing. I love Legos."

Claire Pollitt, who was building Aurora's castle from Sleeping Beauty, said she agreed with her older brother.

"I love Legos, too. My favorite is the Harry Potter Legos," Claire Pollitt said. "But, I really like all of them. I was really excited about coming here."

Johnathan Pollitt said his family will be staying in Maysville for about a week and it is always one of his favorite things to do.

"I love coming to Maysville," he said. "I love everything about it."

"I love going to the farm and seeing the cows," Clair Pollitt said. "But, I really like all of Maysville."

"It's like going back in time," Cindy Pollitt added. "The cobblestone streets, the old architecture. It's a beautiful town. We always enjoying coming here."

The Lego exhibit will remain through the end of August.
