Kentucky Legislators Fight Heroin Problem

Red Stick Now

The president of the Kentucky Commonwealth Attorneys Association says the state needs to fight increased heroin trafficking in three ways…education, treatment and deterrence.

Chris Cohron is the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Warren County and he testified in Frankfort on Friday before the Interim Joint Committee on the Judiciary.

“House Bill 1 has done a tremendous job with the pill epidemic in Kentucky, but our ever resourceful criminal element has now filled that gap with heroin and continues to do so. It’s cheaper, it’s readily accessible and it’s much more deadly.” –Chris Cohron

Cohron is hoping the legislature can address the heroin problem in a comprehensive manner next year. He says it’s important that counseling and treatment services be adequate to meet needs and that young people understand the dangers of heroin addiction. It’s also vital that traffickers who cause deaths, says Cohron, receive stiff penalties.
