The famous Kentucky explorer Daniel Boone was asked if he had ever gotten lost in the wilderness.
Boone reportedly replied, “I can't say I was ever lost, but I was once bewildered for about three days.”
The Kentucky State Parks invite you to summon your inner Daniel Boone and take part in the Kentucky State Parks GeoTour at all 49 state parks starting Sept. 27, National Public Lands Day.
You can get “lost” at a Kentucky State Park while exploring through the sport of geocaching.
Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.
The Kentucky State Parks GeoTour features 49 new geocaches. The caches for this tour will only be in place for one year. The cache containers each contain trade items for those who find them. The Kentucky State Parks encourage guests to “Cache In Trash Out” and help preserve our parks for future generations.
Some of the caches will have prizes such as certificates for free lodging, camping or museums.
To participate, pick up a brochure from any Kentucky State Park or download the passport from the parks’ website at: http://www.parks.ky.gov/geocaching Visit geocaching.com to create a username and log in (this is free). The Kentucky State Parks are celebrating their 90th anniversary this year. A limited number of custom Kentucky State Parks 90th Anniversary geocoins have been designed for this GeoTour. Participants are eligible to receive a coin based on a predetermined number of caches found while supplies last.
