Kentucky's Gas Tax Discussed

Community Table

Governor Beshear says failure to stabilize Kentucky’s gas tax would pose big challenges for the state’s current and future infrastructure needs.

Revenues from the tax have been declining because it’s pegged to the wholesale price of fuel, which is substantially lower than it was last year.

The governor spoke to reporters Tuesday at a press conference in Frankfort.

“I am having conversations this week with leaders in both the House and Senate to see if we can find some common ground and figure out how to stabilize that in some way so that we don’t continue to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in future years that are gonna be needed to build roads and bridges and fill pot holes all across this state.”

Some lawmakers want to freeze the tax at its current level, 27.5 cents per gallon. Others have suggested it be allowed to drop another two-and-a half cents and then be stabilized.
