KLC on Auditing KY Cities

KET

Kentucky’s auditor conducts annual audits of county government throughout the Commonwealth but is not constitutionally required to do so for cities. Some believe the auditor should be given that charge but an official with the Kentucky League of Cities is not one of them.

J.D. Chaney is the KLC’s chief governmental affairs officer. He told members of the Kentucky General Assembly’s Interim Joint Committee on Local Government last week the state’s budgetary requirements for cities are already “very public”. He says they must publish their spending plans in their entirety in local newspapers, so everyone can see how the city is using taxpayer dollars…

Chaney also notes municipal city budgets are audited each year but the work is done by contractors hired by the city.
