Contractors started replacing asphalt with concrete pavement today at the KY 7 and east I-64 intersection in Grayson, which will mean lane closures for the next several weeks.
Current traffic changes include restricting all northbound (from Grayson toward I-64) vehicles to one lane on KY 7 (Carol Malone Boulevard). Through the week of March 21, all KY 7 traffic shifts into the right lane near Interstate Drive and Love’s truck stop. And, the eastbound I-64 on and off ramps (Exit 172) are one lane.
As contractors mill away old asphalt pavement and pour concrete pavement along KY 7 between the I-64 overpass and ramps, as well as on the ramps themselves, lane closures will change. Signs and barrels will mark lane changes. Motorists should also watch for flaggers and expect intermittent stopped traffic.
Considering the heavy traffic in that area, lane closures could cause significant congestion and delays. Through traffic on KY 7 can reroute along US 60 west to KY 1947 and back to KY 7 just north of the interstate to avoid the work zone.
The construction is part of a highway improvement project awarded to Bluegrass Contracting Corporation under a $772,791.50 low-bid contract with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. It will replace asphalt with new concrete pavement on several legs of the intersection:
*Northbound KY 7 (Carol Malone Boulevard) approaching I-64 from downtown Grayson.
*Eastbound I-64 on and off ramps at KY 7 (Carol Malone Boulevard)
*On all lanes of KY 7 between the I-64 overpass and the eastbound on and off ramps.
The concrete will provide added stability by preventing ruts and other wear and tear common to such high-traffic intersections.
In addition, new traffic signal poles and lights will be installed at the KY 7 (Carol Malone Boulevard) and eastbound I-64 on and off ramps.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow-down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
