Lewis County Approved for Emergency Road Funding

Lewis County has been approved for emergency funding to repair slippage on Big Cabin Creek Road in Lewis County.

Lewis County Magistrate Terri Thomas said funding was approved this week and work is expected to begin sometime next week by E and E Construction. The estimated cost to repair the roadway is $41,063.

The funding will come from the Department of Rural Municipal Aid, according to Judge-Executive Todd Ruckel.

Thomas said she is unsure how long it will take to complete the work.

"We were approved and they're expected to start next week," she said.  "We're glad to hear we were approved for this funding. The amount of time it will take to complete the work will be dependent on the weather. At this time, I'm unsure how long it might be."

According to Thomas, the slippage was brought to her attention by a resident in the area after approximately 127 feet of the roadway had slipped.

The slippage is about .8 of a mile from the intersection, which is located off Kentucky 57.

"A resident in the area keeps me updated on what's happening with the road," Thomas said. "Last year, we put gravel on the road to help with some of the issues we've had. Then, I received this phone call saying a portion of the road had slipped."

According to Ruckel, traffic cones remain in place on the roadway, warning drivers to be cautious in the area.

"We've put up cones so drivers know about where the slippage is and to proceed with caution," he said. "It's not the entire road, but it's several feet."

Ruckel said he believes natural erosion is the cause of the slippage.

"We’ve been monitoring the slip area and it has worsened since our initial review of the site,” Ruckel stated. "Our goal is to make the repairs and halt further erosion."
