Magoffin County Bridge at Mountain Parkway Opens

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

Construction crews working in Magoffin County are opening a new overpass across the Mountain Parkway, restoring local access to motorists crossing the parkway west of Salyersville.

The previous overpass at Gifford Road was closed a little more than a year ago to allow construction of a new interchange on the parkway and construction of a new, two-lane span across the Mountain Parkway. Work is continuing to widen the parkway near the Gifford Road interchange, which has not yet opened to traffic.

The new overpass is near mile point 70 of the Mountain Parkway, about 5 miles west of Salyersville.

“We are happy we are able to open this new span to local traffic,” said Marshall Carrier, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s project manager for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. “Residents who rely on this roadway have been extremely understanding as they used detours to cross the Mountain Parkway while we constructed the new bridge. When the interchange is completed, travelers will have even better access.”

The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth. It is a key transportation project designed to close the only gap in a 400-mile, four-lane, high-speed corridor from Pikeville to Paducah.

The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway to four lanes and extend the parkway by about 16 miles between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
