Kentucky Department of Corrections Interim Commissioner Jim Erwin has announced that Malcolm Smith has been promoted to deputy warden at Little Sandy Correctional Complex (LSCC) in Sandy Hook.

"Malcolm Smith has demonstrated the skills necessary to be a valuable addition to the leadership team of Little Sandy,” said Erwin. “I am pleased to promote someone with such an excellent performance record and the experience needed to serve the department in this new role as deputy warden."

Smith began his career in corrections in October 2006 as a correctional officer at LSCC. Smith was a restricted housing officer for over a year prior to promoting to a classification and treatment officer in August 2009.

In this position he co-facilitated the Thinking for a Change program and taught InsideOut Dad. Smith also sponsored the Lifer’s Club. In August 2013 Smith was promoted to unit administrator I for a housing unit that includes the orientation dorm and the Substance Abuse Program (SAP).

In March 2015, Smith was promoted to unit administrator II for the same housing unit.

Smith graduated from Morehead State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. In 2013 he went through Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Investigator Training. He received LSCC’s achievement award in 2014. He is a member of the Laurel Gorge Chapter of the Kentucky Council on Crime and Delinquency (KCCD).
