Massie Opposes Patriot Act

Fox News

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie says technology has made it easier for the government to invade people’s privacy but that doesn’t make it right or constitutional.

The Garrison Republican appeared Saturday (May 16) on C-Span’s The Communicators program.

Massie is hoping Congress stops the bulk collection of Americans’ telephone data, which has been taking place under the Patriot Act.

“Just because it’s easy to search your data, and it’s less intrusive to you, they don’t have to come in, pick your locks and come in and take your papers out of your drawers like they did two hundred years ago when our founding fathers privacies were invaded. Just because it’s easier to do on a computer, doesn’t mean it’s constitutional or even moral.”

Massie says he has never liked the Patriot Act and expressed opposition to it in his first Congressional campaign in 2010. He believes it infringes on civil liberties. That legislation expires at the end of the month.
