Morehead and Olive Hill Recognzied For Trail Town Initiatives

A new report by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services cites the addition of “Trail Towns” in Morehead and Olive Hill as among the state’s efforts to increase physical activity and prevent obesity.

The annual report notes that the State Office of Adventure Tourism expects to certify eight more trails by the end of 2015.

The Cabinet’s report indicates that the Dawkins Trail, a rail to trail initiative in eastern Kentucky continues to grow. Eighteen miles of the path have now been completed.

First Lady Jane Beshear says the new nature paths serve two purposes. She says they promote exercise and should boost the local economy.

“More and more, the growth area is in adventure tourism. People want to get out of the offices, get out of the cities, get out and experience something that is different, they love nature. It’s a real opportunity for us to highlight and to really use what we have. Kentucky is the most beautiful state anywhere.”

According to the Health and Family Services Cabinet, 224 bicycle and pedestrian projects funded by federal grant dollars have been awarded in Kentucky over the past eight years.
