The community is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Morehead Railroad and Historical Museum.
The event, slated for Saturday, May 14, is set for noon to 4 p.m. at the First Street location. Tours, music and nostalgia are just a few items on the agenda.
The event is designed to take one back to days gone by when the railways were full and tourists would be dropped and picked up along their journeys. Large supply shipments passed through the station which still is very much intact complete with a weighing area and dry storage area.
“We are thrilled to welcome the community to our museum,” said Steve Young, volunteer. “We feel the facility will be a great attraction for our area and a great tribute to the history of the railroad.”
“The freight station has undergone a dramatic change that has truly enhanced the First Street district. I am proud of the volunteers and look forward to visitors touring this museum and appreciating a piece of Morehead’s history,” said Morehead Tourism Commission Executive Director Joy Brown.
Volunteers have spent the last year renovating, updating and preserving this historical relic from simpler times in Morehead’s history.
In early March 2016, the Morehead C & O Railway Freight Depot was officially approved for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
