Morehead Crash Victim Identified as Nursing Home Volunteer

WKYT

An investigation is underway into a deadly crash in Rowan County.

Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt, Jr. says Jim Ham, 84, of Morehead, was killed in the crash Friday night (Jan. 31) on East Wilkinson Boulevard (U.S. 60), near the campus of Morehead State University.

Northcutt tells WKYT that Ham was a volunteer at the Life Care Center in Morehead for much of his life. He says Ham was walking from the nursing home to his home when he was killed.

Around 8 p.m., Morehead Police were called to a report of a driver hitting Ham, who was trying to cross U.S. 60.

Police say this is a stretch of road that some people, living in nearby apartments, tend to cross to visit the gas station and other stores and homes on the opposite side of the road.

"It appears that he (the driver) hit him, and the final resting place of the body is about 250, 300 feet away," Morehead Police Sgt. Kyle Callahan said. "So I don't know, it appears once he was hit, he was on the hood of the vehicle for a little while."

Police say the driver notified 911, and stayed on scene to answer all questions. At this time, they don't expect to file charges.
