Morehead State University Awards Phil Simms Honorary Degree

Former Morehead State and New York Giants football star Phil Simms received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree Saturday (May 9) during the University’s spring commencement.

Simms told more than 11-hundred graduates that being back on the MSU campus was a special experience.

“You know, it’s a special place in my heart. Being here the last couple of days, being with everybody here, to see all the people, to come back, to meet my friends and all that.”

Nearly 40 years later, Simms says, his closest friends are still his former classmates at Morehead State.

The New Jersey resident was the Ohio Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1977, the Giants’ first-round draft pick in 1979 and was voted the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXI. 

Simms was He was inducted into the Morehead State Athletic Hall of Fame in October 1995.
