MSPR to Air Specials For July 4th Weekend

Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) will celebrate the July 4 holiday with special programs.

“Celebrating Liberty” will air at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3. The show will feature patriotic music with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  Songs to be feature include:  "The Pledge of Allegiance,” “Rally Round the Flag,” "The Star-Spangled Banner,” "America, The Dream Goes On,” and "Shenandoah.”

At 8 p.m. Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, join MSPR for “Van Morrison: Duets.” It might have taken a while, but Morrison never gave up on his idea to sing duets with some of his favorite artists. Once it got rolling, one-by-one, the singers came to sing with the legendary Morrison, including such established artists as Mavis Staples, Joss Stone, Taj Mahal, Bobby Womack and more. In the one hour radio special, you'll hear from Morrison himself about how he chose the songs from his vast catalog to re-work into duets.

Morehead State Public Radio will air the 2015 United States Air Force Band Jazz Heritage Radio Series featuring the USAF Airmen of Note Saturday, July 4, from 9 p.m. to midnight and Saturday, July 5, from 6-9 p.m.

Throughout its long history, the Airmen of Note has regularly performed and recorded with the leading artists in the jazz world. In fact, the list of guest artists featured with the Note reads like a "who's who" of the jazz industry. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that comprise The U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Major Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band, the current band consists of 18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.

The special will include Guest artist Bobby Shew, hour 1; Tribute to the Greatest Jazz Small Groups, hour 2; and Best of the Jazz Heritage Series, hour 3.

Morehead State Public Radio broadcasts from the campus of Morehead State University, and serves more than 20 counties in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. WMKY (90.3 FM) serves as the flagship station for the network, which includes a translator (88.3 FM) in Inez.
