MSU Athletes Paint The Town Blue And Gold

MSU Athletics

More than 200 Morehead State student-athletes, coaches and administrators painted the town blue and gold on Saturday morning as representatives of the football, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading and dance programs handed out several hundred schedule posters and cards.

"Everyone in our football program is excited about the 2014 season," Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. "Today was about building relationships with our existing fans and recruiting some new ones. It's always great to get out and be visible in the community. Playing at home should always be an advantage, and we need Jayne Stadium to be packed this fall. We have much higher expectations on the field this year, but we also need our fans to step up and help our game-day atmosphere."

Morehead State's cheerleaders and dancers wore full uniforms, while its football players donned game jerseys. Eagle soccer and volleyball student-athletes wore t-shirts representing their sports. The event, which lasted approximately 90 minutes, took place under sunny skies and 80 degrees.

"Today's event was great for everyone who participated," senior soccer player Jade Flory said. "It's important to promote all of our athletic teams at Morehead State, share our stories and recruit more fans. There are high expectations for our soccer program this fall, and we need everyone in the community to help us be successful. We flew under the radar for most of last season before winning the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, but we will have the target on our backs in 2014."

Morehead State Athletics is asking local businesses to support the Eagles in the following ways:

·         Have employees wear Morehead State apparel or blue and gold on Fridays and Saturday of home football weekends (Sept. 5-6, Oct. 3-4, 10-11, 24-25 and Nov. 14-15).

·         Place "Go Eagles, beat (insert the opponent)" on business marquees the week leading up to home football games.

·         Display schedule posters, schedule cards and ticket information for all MSU athletic teams.

·         Decorate businesses in Morehead State blue and gold throughout the school year.

"My teammates and I enjoy promoting all of our athletic teams at Morehead State," sophomore volleyball player Hope Rillema said. "All of the businesses have been great today. Everyone has been really receptive to chatting with us and hanging our fall sports posters. Our volleyball team enjoys playing in front of big crowds at Wetherby Gym. We're planning to have another highly successful season, and we hope many of the people we met today will come to our matches this fall."

Morehead State soccer opens its campaign with road matches on Aug. 22, 24, 29 and 31. The Eagles will take on Appalachian State in their home opener on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.

Morehead State volleyball begins its regular season on Aug. 29-30 at Wetherby Gym. Radford and Northern Kentucky will join MSU in the two-day Eagle Challenge.

Morehead State football opens its regular season on Aug. 30 at Richmond. The Eagles will square off with Pikeville (Ky.) in their home opener on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.

The MSU home football opener, which falls on Family Weekend, is being dubbed as a "Black Out." Fans can purchase a "Lights Out" t-shirt and ticket to the game for just $10. Click here for information on the 29 local businesses that are participating in this year's program.

"Today was a new event for Morehead State Athletics, and all indications point to it being successful," Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs Brad Smith added. "We had 100 percent participation from our fall sports teams, which was terrific to see. I also appreciate all of the business owners and employees being receptive to the efforts of our student-athletes. There's lots of excitement around the 2014-15 school year, and we need everyone in the community to help us rise and soar."
