MSU Claims First in Five National Baseball Stat Categories

With the NCAA Baseball College World Series wrapped up, the organization's final stats have been released, and Morehead State claimed first place in four national categories.

The 2015 Eagles, who won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title and participated in the program's first NCAA regional since 1983, paced all 295 Division I teams in batting average (.332), runs per game (8.4), doubles per game (2.87) and slugging percentage (.516).

Morehead State also placed highly in several other offensive categories, including runs scored (2nd -- 505), hits (2nd -- 736), on-base percentage (3rd -- .415), sacrifice flies (7th -- 34), home runs per game (12th -- 1.10) and hit by a pitch (16th -- 81).

A number of individual players also finished among the nation's top 20 in a multitude of categories. Senior catcher Chris Robinson, the OVC Player of the Year, was among the best in seven categories, including runs per game (2nd -- 1.34), hits (2nd -- 99), RBI per game (6th -- 1.19), total bases (6th -- 161), batting average (8th -- .402), doubles per game (12th -- 0.43) and slugging percentage (16th -- .654).

Senior first baseman Kane Sweeney, who is now a member of the New York Yankees' organization, cracked the top 20 in four categories, including walks per game (11th -- 0.90), runs per game (15th -- 1.08), total bases (17th -- 152) and on-base percentage (19th -- .482). Senior right-fielder Brandon Rawe, who was drafted by the Miami Marlins' organization, ranked among the elite in three categories, including runs per game (6th -- 1.15), hits (T-8th -- 92) and total bases (13th -- 152).

Senior leftfielder Nick Newell, senior shortstop Robby Spencer and sophomore centerfielder Ryan Kent were ranked in in the top 20 in two categories each. Newell's rankings included doubles per game (4th -- 0.47) and hits (T-17th -- 90), while Spencer was among the best in RBI per game (7th -- 1.18) and sacrifice flies (20th -- 7). Kent was ranked in runs per game (10th -- 1.10) and hits (T-17th -- 90).

Morehead State, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Mike McGuire, set program records for victories (38) and OVC wins (20).
