MSU Inducts Three Into Hall Of Fame

MSU Athletics

Three former Eagles were formally inducted into the Morehead State Athletic Hall of Fame at a banquet on Friday, October 25. The 2013 class includes two-time conference volleyball Player of the Year Amy (Almond) Paul, men's basketball standout Henry Akin and football star as well as long-time faculty athletic representative Mike Brown.

"The Athletic Hall of Fame is the highest individual accolade our department can award," Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson said. "It is my honor to welcome these outstanding individuals to that prestigious list. It is great to have Amy, Henry and Mike back on campus. They are all first-class people who have accomplished a lot after their college careers."

Paul, an outside hitter from 1999-02, is the only two-time all-region honoree in program history, earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association accolade in 2001 and 2002. The Columbus, Ohio, native was crowned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year those seasons, becoming only the second player in program history to earn two Player of the Year awards.

Paul still ranks third in Morehead State history in career kills (1,672) and sixth in career hitting percentage (.267). She continues to rank sixth in single-season kills (517) and owns the freshman-class record for hitting percentage (.301).

Akin, originally from Troy, Mich., was an All-OVC selection in 1963-64 and 1964-65. He led MSU in rebounding both seasons with averages of 11.5 and 12.5. Akin ranked second on the team in scoring both years with averages of 22.2 and 18.6, checking in only behind current Hall of Famer Harold Sergent. He ranked in the OVC's top 10 for scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and free throw accuracy both seasons.

Akin was selected by the New York Knicks in the second round (11th overall) of the 1966 NBA Draft and played for the Knicks in 1966-67. He was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1967 NBA Expansion Draft and played for that organization in 1967-68. He also played in the ABA for the Kentucky Colonels in 1968-69.

Brown, whose hometown is Logan, Ohio, played multiple positions on the Eagle football team from 1959-62. A Second-Team All-OVC selection as a senior, he earned the league's Most Outstanding Defensive Back and MSU's Most Valuable Player honor in 1962 while helping the Eagles to a share of their first OVC championship.

Brown started at quarterback and defensive back as a junior and started every game at defensive back as a sophomore. He led the conference in punting as a sophomore and senior. Brown returned to his alma mater and served as an assistant coach from 1966-68, helping guide MSU to its second league title in 1966.

He served 15 years as the faculty representative for athletics, a critical position which works to ensure student-athlete eligibility and serves as the department's liaison to the academic programs at the institution. Brown also chaired the MSU athletic committee for 10 years.

Established in 1985, the Athletic Hall of Fame honors former Eagles whose achievements in athletics and as ambassadors of the university have had a positive impact on Morehead State. The Hall of Fame has enshrined 131 members.
