Morehead State University has been ranked 12th in the South in the U.S. News and World Report rankings of the Best Colleges for Veterans to help veterans pursue a college education under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
The new rankings provide data and information on schools that offer federal benefits, including tuition and housing assistance, to veterans and active service members.
All of the Best Colleges for Veterans scored well in terms of graduation rate, faculty resources, reputation and other markers of academic quality in the 2014 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges. To qualify for the new rankings, the schools had to be certified for the GI Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium.
“While all prospective students seek a good education from a reputable institution, our military veterans can take advantage of expanded educational benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill,” said Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer for U.S. News. “We developed these rankings to help them find a top-quality institution that also offers federal benefits that ease the burden of applying, paying for and completing a college degree.”
In total, there were 234 ranked schools across all 10 U.S. News ranking categories: National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities (North, South, Midwest and West) and Regional Colleges (North, South, Midwest and West).
“We are pleased to be recognized as the campus community continues to build on MSU’s tradition of providing the help veterans and their families need to transition from soldier to student and ultimately to college graduate,” said Max Ammons, MSU’s director of military initiatives. “Two years ago, MSU opened the new Veterans Resource Center, which assists prospective and current military and student veterans by providing counseling and direction on all educational benefits, enrollment and registration assistance, counseling resources and referrals, academic and career assistance, and provides a place for student veterans to study or relax and reconnect with their fellow student veterans.”
In February, MSU’s Veterans Resource Center was named in honor of Lt. Col. Alan R. Baldwin. A former assistant to the provost, Baldwin joined MSU in 1978 as an assistant professor of military science. After leaving briefly, he returned in 1985 and was named chair of the Department of Military Science. During his tenure, he held numerous titles. He also served on the Morehead City Council for 13 years.
