MSU reduces administrator positions and cuts administrative costs

Morehead State University

Morehead State University’s Board of Regents met on Thursday, Feb. 22, for a quarterly work session.

During the work session, MSU President Dr. Joseph (Jay) Morgan relayed plans to the Board to reduce administrative positions by eliminating one vice president position, three assistant vice president positions, and several director positions through an administrative reorganization.

“The administrative cost reductions total over $1 million dollars in savings. These reductions are part of our commitment at MSU to keep our resources focused on the classroom and fostering student success. MSU has a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:19 which makes us a very student-centered University,” said Morgan.

The Board also conducted a special called meeting to hear updates on the construction and renovation of the Adron Doran University Center. The Board voted to raise the capital project scope on the construction of the Center to account for the early construction of 3rd Street Eats, a temporary dining facility to house dining commons during the renovation process.

The original cost of the project was $49,679,000 and now the cost to complete ADUC is $51,920,562, which is a $2,241,562 difference. The funds for renovation are from state dollars appropriated to MSU in a previous state budget.

The Board also heard reports on facilities updates, the strategic plan, a legislative update, board bylaws and a repositioning and budget overview.

The meetings were held at the MSU at Prestonsburg campus.

The next quarterly meeting will be Thursday, March 29.
