MSU Softball Scores Doubleheader Sweep at Rival EKU

MSU Athletics

Freshman right-hander Mackenzie Grossmann picked up the victory in game one and save in game two as the Morehead State softball team registered a 7-4, 6-5 doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Hood Field.

The Eagles improve to 11-13 overall, 3-3 in league play and 3-4 on the road with their seventh win in 10 contests. The Colonels slip to 13-18 overall, 4-4 in conference action and 2-4 at home. MSU will aim for its first three-game OVC sweep since April 26-27, 2014, on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Grossmann improved to 6-4 and notched her first collegiate save. She allowed just two earned runs and scattered five hits while walking four and striking out five in the first 5.1 innings of the opener. The hurler recorded four ground-outs, including a double play, to wrap up the nightcap.

Morehead State pounded out 23 hits in 14 at-bats. Senior third baseman Katie Raile highlighted game one by going 2-for-3 with one homer, two runs and three RBI. Junior left fielder Lizzy Margagliotti led the Eagles in game two with an RBI groundout and three-run round-tripper.

Raile and sophomore shortstop Karly Thompson posted four hits apiece on the day, while freshman catcher Laine Simmons went 3-for-4 with one run in the opener. Seven of MSU's starters managed at least one hit in the opener, while eight starters tallied at least one base knock in the nightcap.

Morehead State built a 6-2 cushion by the top of the fourth in game one and hung on for the series-opening victory. The Eagles opened up a 6-1 advantage by the top of the sixth in game two. MSU survived Eastern Kentucky's two long balls and four-run bottom of the sixth to win by one.

Senior right-hander Tanna Seuferer, who allowed three runs in five innings, improved to 5-4 with the victory in the second contest. She scattered five hits and walked none while fanning five.

Senior right-hander Shaylon Robb, who was charged with six runs and seven hits in 3.2 frames, fell to 6-6 with the game-one loss. Junior right-hander Hayley Flynn, who yielded five runs and seven base knocks, slipped to 2-5 with the game-two loss. EKU pitching registered 18 strikeouts in the twin-bill.
