A ‘Notable’ Holiday - December Brings Musical Performances to the Kentucky Artisan Center

Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

December brings colder temperatures, but all is cheerful and warm for shoppers and visitors at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea where a variety of musical performances and artisan demonstrations will enhance the shopping experience.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, Sherrie Cocanougher, of Parksville, will demonstrate how she creates jewelry from antique sterling silverware from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Center.

Working with glass has been Cocanougher’s main medium and she creates her glass beads using soft glass from Moretti, annealing them in a digitally controlled kiln.

Cocanougher’s signature design incorporates vintage silverware into her bracelets and necklaces. Searching in antique stores and rummage sales, she finds odd silverware pieces, which she tumbles in a rock polisher to clean and polish the surfaces of the flatware. She combines the refurbished silverware with her handmade glass beads to create unique jewelry.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 10, musicians Lorinda Jones and Cathy Wilde will perform holiday music on Celtic instruments from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center. Jones plays Celtic harp and Appalachian dulcimer and Wilde plays the Irish Uilleann bagpipes and flute.

Wilde played the classical flute until a trip to Ireland in 1987 introduced her to the tin whistle. Wilde found her true instrument, the Irish bellow-blown Uilleann bagpipes in 2007. This instrument is a smaller, quieter and more versatile version of the Scottish bagpipes.

This musical duo will perform sets of holiday music, talk to visitors about their music and their unique instruments and be available to sign their CDs. Enjoy Celtic flavored Christmas carols and holiday favorites by these talented musicians.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, visitors to the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea can experience woodcarving demonstrations by the Berea Welcome Center Carvers, who will carve and talk with visitors from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers live in many communities in central Kentucky, and their activities include carving classes, carving demonstrations at schools, monthly Kentucky Artisan Center demonstrations and special events.

The Center will be closed all day Christmas day, Dec. 25, but will be open regular hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all that week.

Join in the holiday spirit; listen to live holiday music and shop for everyone on your Christmas list! The Kentucky Artisan Center has an amazing array of gift items – from jewelry to pottery, paintings, turned wood, books, musical recordings, furniture, colorful clothing, specialty foods, and ornaments of every hue and color.
