Proposed State Budget Cuts to Reduce Family Resource Programs

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

With proposed budget cuts by Gov. Matt Bevin, school districts across the state could lose or be forced to reduce, Family Resource and Youth Service Center services.

The governor's proposed budget will cut out 4.5 percent of funding for the current school year, with 9 percent cuts projected for the next two years.

Mary Robinson-Griffey, FRC coordinator at Mason County School District said Friday the 4.5 percent cut this year would mean a return of more than $3,000 to the state from her office, which employs four people.

Family Resource and Student Service Centers assist students and families with such programs as the food back pack program, which provides foods for at risk children who may not have sufficient nutrition over the weekend; the back to school fair which supplies school supplies to students; clothing; holiday assistance (gifts) for families in the school district; and most recently, the introduction of free dental services for at risk children.

"There's a lot that we do that people in the community may not be aware of," Robinson-Griffey said. "We're helping students and alleviating a barrier to give everyone opportunities."

During the 2014/2015 school year, Family Resource and Youth Service Centers assisted more than 525,000 students in Kentucky.

In an effort to have the voice of their communities heard, the public is being asked to participate in a Public Policy Survey.  The survey results tell legislators how important the FYRSC program is to the local community.

In order to participate in the survey, log online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FRYSCKyPublicPolicySurvey2016

The survey is open until the close of business day on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
