Schuler, Eagles Shine in Senior Day Win Over Jacksonville State

MSU Athletics

Senior Sydney Schuler led the way with 16 kills as Morehead State volleyball swept Jacksonville State on Senior Day at Wetherby Gym on Saturday afternoon.

With the win and the weekend sweep, the Eagles move to 11-15 overall and 7-5 in league play.

"This was a really big win for us, we're fighting with Jacksonville State for position in the OVC standings and this was a critical match," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "I felt really good about the way that we performed offensively. We honored our four seniors today and there's a lot of emotion there, which can go one or two ways, and fortunately we fueled off of that emotion today."

Late in the first set, Morehead State led 23-19 when Jacksonville State reeled off four straight points to even the score. But, the Eagles answered with two straight points to take the set, 25-23. They then closed out the match with wins in the second and the third sets, 25-20 and 25-18.

Schuler's 16 kills were one shy of a career high and she hit an impressive .565. After two sets, the senior from Independence, Ky., had 13 kills on just 15 attacks and was hitting .800. She also added three block assists and two digs.

"She was absolutely unstoppable, I was telling my staff, 'don't wake her up, don't mess with her, don't touch her, don't tell her anything', just so she would stay in that zone," said Gordon.

Overall, the Eagles finished with 52 kills to JSU's 31 and hit .453 for the match. After recording 18 blocks last night, they had 12 today in just three sets.

Sophomore Merideth Jewell had a strong performance, finishing with 14 kills, while hitting .308, and recording seven block assists. Freshman Karlee Reynolds recorded a team-high nine block assists, while adding five kills.

Senior Bailey Nichol recorded kills on the final three points to close out the match with senior Stacy Silver dishing out all three assists. Nichol finished with eight kills and a team-high 42 assists. Silver also added six digs.

"Bailey did an excellent job for us in the third set, getting some critical kills, and Stacy had some big digs and crucial passes for us," said Gordon.

Freshman Danielle McCarson led the team with 11 digs.

With the win today, Morehead State extends their winning streak on Senior Day to seven games.

Looking to build off of three straight conference wins, the Eagles conclude their six-match homestand and their home schedule against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
