Soccer Advances In OVC Semi-Finals

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State soccer team tallied three goals in the final 16 minutes on Friday night (Nov. 8) to post a 4-2 victory over Austin Peay in the semifinals of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Skyhawk Field.

The second-seeded Eagles, who improve to 9-10-1 overall, will face top-seeded and host UT Martin in the finale of the league tournament on Sunday (Nov. 10) at 2 p.m. The sixth-seeded Lady Govs finish the campaign 11-6-2.

Morehead State will be playing in its third OVC championship match in the past six years.  The Eagles earned NCAA Tournament berths in 2008 and 2010 after capturing league tournament titles.

Morehead State junior forward Jade Flory opened the scoring with her 14th goal of the season when she converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. It was MSU's first penalty kick of the season. The Eagles finished the first 45 minutes with a 7-2 shot advantage, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.

Austin Peay scored the first of five second-half goals in the 66th minute, when Tatiana Ariza headed the ball into the goal despite an overly crowded penalty box following a corner kick.  The Lady Govs took a 2-1 lead 3:43 later on Shelby Olszewski's fifth score of the season.

Morehead State responded 4:39 later on junior forward Macy Cobb's fourth tally of the season, when she put away a free kick by sophomore defender Kelsey Gomez that was failed to be cleared by the Lady Govs defense.

Freshman forward Angela Black scored the final two goals of the match just 37 seconds apart. Her first tally was a hard shot from a tough angle, while her second was the result of beating the APSU goalkeeper one-on-one after a long pass from junior midfielder Lindsey Oettle.

The Eagles finished with a 14-10 edge in shots, while forcing four saves. APSU forced two saves from sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd. MSU also won the corner kick battle 6-3.
