Soccer Concludes Home Schedule with 5-0 Victory

MSU Athletics

Goals and assists by four different players highlighted Morehead State soccer's 5-0 victory over Eastern Illinois Sunday (Oct. 26) in the 2014 home finale at Jayne Stadium.

MSU improved to 9-5-5 overall and 4-3-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles were 7-1-0 at home this season. The Panthers fell to 2-14-2 overall and 1-7-1 in the league.

It was Senior Day, with 12 members of the team appearing in their final match at Jayne Stadium.

Senior forwards Macy Cobb and Jade Flory, along with senior defenders Kelsey Gomez and Elizabeth Tresnak, registered goals. EIU also knocked one in for an own goal. Flory, sophomore forward Angela Black and senior midfielders Caity Fox and Ali Hawksford notched assists in the Eagles' fourth shutout of the year.

"I just felt like it was our day," Head Coach Warren Lipka said. "We started fast, and I could just tell we were going to have a great day. I am very proud of the senior class for how far they have come. Some people forget that when they were sophomores (in 2012), we only won two matches."

Cobb opened the scoring at 4:39 following an assist from Flory. It marked Cobb's fifth goal of the year and Flory's team-best seventh helper. The Eagles moved on top 2-0 in the 12th minute when a ball ricocheted off an EIU defender into the back of the net.

Flory tallied her 12th goal this season and the 26th of her two-year career at 21:20. Black was credited with her fourth assist of the year.

Tresnak headed in a corner kick by Fox at the 60:35 mark to make it 4-0, and Gomez secured her first goal of the season and second career tally at 76:50. Hawksford sent in a pass for her first assist of the year.

Junior goalkeepers Kaitlyn Murphy and Hannah Seeman combined for the shutout with a save apiece. Seeman played the final 25:46, her first action of the year.

Morehead State peppered Eastern Illinois' net with a season-high 28 shots, including 13 on target. EIU goalkeeper Emily Wolf, making her first start of the year due to injuries, stopped eight shots.

Twenty-three players saw action for the hosts.

"We still have another match to play," Lipka said. "And if we can get a result, we still have a great chance to be in the conference tournament. I thought it was important to get a lot of people in the match today and lessen our chances of injuries."

MSU's regular season finale is at Eastern Kentucky Friday (Oct. 31) at 4 p.m.
