Sophomore forward Angela Black recorded her fourth and fifth goals of the season on Friday night (Sept. 26), but the Morehead State soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie against Belmont at Rose Park.
The Eagles move to 5-2-4 overall and 2-2-4 on the road, while the Bruins are now 3-3-3 overall and 1-1-3 at home. It was the first Ohio Valley Conference match for both schools.
Black's first goal of the evening, which came in the 66th minute, tied the match at one. Her second tally, which came in the 81st minute, gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. The reigning OVC Freshman of the Year now has three two-goal performances in 33 career matches.
"Angela had two quality goals tonight," Head Coach Warren Lipka said. "She's so fast, athletic and puts a lot of pressure on the opponent. I was pleased with the way our team responded when we fell behind 1-0. It's not easy to finish with a tie on the road once that happens."
Senior defender Meredith Martin put Belmont on the scoreboard in the 15th minute off an assist from senior defender Kim Elmore. The Bruins held the one-goal lead at intermission.
After Black's back-to-back scores, MSU enjoyed a one-goal advantage until the 89th minute when it was whistled for a red card. That's when Belmont freshman Belicia Mendiola found the back of the net off a free kick to even the match and close out the scoring for both teams.
The Eagles played both overtime periods with just 10 players as a result of the red card.
"Our young ladies really battled, especially in the two overtimes," Lipka said. "It's not easy playing 10 on 11, but they stepped up and helped us salvage a point in the standings. We had several chances in the second overtime, but just couldn't get a shot past their goalkeeper."
Morehead State recorded 14 shots, including six on goal. Belmont tallied 12 offensive attempts, including seven on net. Black notched a match-high six shots, while senior forward Jade Flory added four for the Eagles. Mendiola posted a team-best three tries for the Bruins.
BU registered a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, while MSU tallied a 5-4 upper hand in goalkeeper saves.
