Top-Notch Times Highlight MSU Cross Country in Louisville

MSU Athletics

Freshman Farah Abdulkarim recorded the third-fastest 8K in program history, sophomore Justin Moakler turned in the seventh-best time in school history for the men, and senior Alex Morris paced the women with what would have been the seventh fastest program time as both Eagle cross country teams ran at the Greater Louisville Classic at Tom Sawyer State Park Saturday.

Abdulkarim crossed the finish line in 26th place among the huge 312-runner field in the men's gold race. That time (24:37.96) was only 22 seconds off Ron Duncan's school record set in 2007. And Moakler ran the course in 24:48.43, good enough for seventh on the all-time best list. The men's team finished 14th in the 33-team field.

Morris covered the 5K women's course in 18:14.30. That would have ranked seventh as well, but Morris already owns the second-best time from a race in 2014. The women were 28th.

On the men's side, Corey Tooke came in next at 25:26.00, and Dylan Rich was fourth on the squad at 25:49.90. Senior Jesse Moreno rounded out the top five at 25:58.35.

For the women, sophomore Kansas Greenwell (18:54.70) and freshman Caitlin Cunningham (18:55.10) were nearly neck-and-neck, and freshman Abbie Dorn was not far behind at 18:56.90. Senior Mackenzie Butler finished off the top five at 19:00.60.

The next action for both teams is at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Race in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 15.
