Tuition-Free Plan Could Benefit Community College Students

Heavy Purse

Rowan County Judge Executive Walter Blevins believes students at the Rowan Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College would benefit tremendously if Congress were to approve a plan for two years of free tuition at community colleges across the nation.

President Obama is recommending such an initiative and is expected to discuss it in more detail Tuesday night during the State of the Union address.

Blevins says a tuition break for Rowan students would be especially helpful now that they’re looking at a sizable increase in fees to pay for a new, advanced manufacturing training center in Rowan County. Two years of school tuition free, says Blevins, would allow students to earn a degree without piling up the huge debts many of them are incurring today.

Blevins concedes, however, he’s not optimistic about the prospects for the President’s plan. He doubts if the Democrat can push the idea through a Republican-controlled Congress.
